Oliver Tree Killed in Helicopter Collision in Rio de Janeiro

The American artist, known for his viral meme rap and relentless output, was among several passengers who died in a mid-air crash involving two helicopters.

The American artist Oliver Tree has died in a helicopter accident in Rio de Janeiro. The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro confirmed the collision, which involved two helicopters. Tree, born Oliver Tree Nickell, was a passenger alongside Lucas Vignale, Argentinian social media influencer Gaspar Prim, and Lucas Brito Chaves. Pilots Alexandre Souza and Charles Marsillac also died in the crash. One person was killed in the second aircraft.

Tree built his career at the intersection of music and online performance. He gained traction as a viral figure, using absurdist visuals and deadpan humor to amplify his meme rap releases. His 2019 debut single, “Hurt,” arrived through Atlantic Records and captured a significant digital audience. The following year’s debut album, Ugly Is Beautiful, solidified a formula that leaned heavily on stylistic contrast and self-aware presentation.

What followed was a period of near-constant motion. Tree released four albums in six years, maintaining an aggressive touring schedule while shaping material across a reported 80 countries. His most recent project, Love You Madly Hate You Badly, was issued in April 2026. Reviewing the album for CLASH, Chris Connor noted its unevenness but acknowledged the ambition and risk behind its stylistic shifts.

Tree’s work often divided opinion, caught between satire and sincerity. What remained clear was his understanding of attention as a medium in itself—a logic that defined his rise and made his presence difficult to ignore.
