More than two years after its initial announcement, the stage adaptation of Prince’s landmark film has locked in a Broadway run at the Majestic Theatre, with previews beginning in March 2027.
The stage adaptation of Prince’s Purple Rain has secured its Broadway home, over two years after the project was first announced. Previews begin at New York’s Majestic Theatre on March 12, 2027, with an official opening night on April 12—the 42nd anniversary of the film’s original release.
Directed by Saheem Ali (Buena Vista Social Club), the production arrives following a developmental world premiere in Minneapolis last year and a subsequent creative overhaul. Peter Duchan has replaced Pulitzer Prize winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins as book writer, and Emmy winner Ebony Williams now leads choreography. Music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations come from Jason Michael Webb, with Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes serving as music advisers.
The show tracks The Kid’s drive to break out of Minneapolis’ club scene amid family tensions and romantic entanglements, drawing on more than 20 songs from Prince’s catalog. “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” and the title track all feature.
Tickets go on sale this September, with additional casting yet to be announced. The musical is part of a broader push to extend Prince’s reach: later this summer, his estate will release Timeless, a posthumous album of 10 rare and previously unreleased recordings spanning nearly four decades.
