Ava Mendoza’s ‘Alive Alone, Alive Together’ Rethinks Her Recent Past

The guitarist documents a set of reworked pieces and one new composition with drummer Hamid Drake.

Brooklyn guitarist Ava Mendoza has released a new album that reexamines her recent work. Alive Alone, Alive Together includes seven reworked versions of tracks from her 2021 instrumental record New Spells and last year’s The Circular Train, along with one new piece. It was recorded in 2025 while she was on tour in the United States and Europe with drummer Hamid Drake.

Revisiting material so soon after its initial release is not the safest move, but the album makes a case
