Dexter in the Newsagent Returns with “Fantasy,” a Song About Wealth From a Child’s Perspective

The south London singer-songwriter Dexter in the Newsagent has released “Fantasy,” her first song of 2026 and the follow-up to last year’s debut mixtape, Time Flies. The new track arrives with a video directed by Iris Luz, placing the artist inside a neon-lit phone box.

The song’s subject is money, but the angle is not aspiration in the usual sense. In a press release, Dexter said she wrote it earlier this year after losing a sum of money and feeling lost. Watching drive-through videos of wealthy neighborhoods on YouTube led her to a different vantage point: the way a child imagines wealth without understanding it. A fancy car, a walk-in wardrobe, a chef — these become fantasy objects rather than symbols of status.

“That’s where the song came from and I love everything about how fancy and dreamy it feels,” she said. “It’s like my own fantasy world where I am a millionaire.”

The single follows a stretch of activity around Time Flies, including European festival dates and a video for “Stranger to Love.” “Fantasy” continues that momentum without chasing it, positioning Dexter in the Newsagent as a writer who can turn a moment of frustration into something with genuine texture.
