eranine Turns a Flight Home From Lollapalooza Into ‘Bear Witness’

eranine’s new single began on a plane ride home from a festival set, with Sofia Coppola’s ‘Priscilla’ as its prompt. The result is heavier and more deliberate than anything the Florida songwriter has released so far.

Songs written on planes usually arrive as fragments. ‘Bear Witness’ arrived as a direction. eranine started the track on a flight home from a Lollapalooza performance, working from a prompt that had little to do with their own catalogue: Sofia Coppola’s ‘Priscilla’.

The Florida singer-songwriter’s new single sets distorted guitars and atmospheric synth lines around subject matter heavier than its sound. The song circles trauma, innocence and survival, and eranine treats it as a world-building exercise rather than a straight account, shaping material that reads as a space someone else can stand in.

That intention is stated plainly. “I want anyone who has experienced something similar to know that they aren’t alone,” they say, adding: “I’m no savior, but that’s what I do this for.”

‘Bear Witness’ also clarifies where eranine sits. The project has developed independently, drawing a following through live shows and a tour stint with Slowdive, a billing that makes the record’s guitar weight less of a surprise. The single is presented as the beginning of a new chapter, with a fuller body of work implied rather than announced. What it establishes is a songwriter willing to work at a scale beyond the one they have occupied so far.
