Fontaines D.C.’s Friday night headline appearance at Reading Festival did not separate the music from the grief. Mid-set, Grian Chatten acknowledged the difficult months following the death of their manager Trevor Dietz on 7 June. The band had called Dietz the “sixth member” and said they had never known Fontaines without him. That context shaped the atmosphere on the Grid Stage, where the delayed show felt raw rather than celebratory.
The set still moved with purpose. “Boys in the Better Land” opened as a crowd spark, followed quickly by “Here’s the Thing” and “Nabokov.” Chatten’s choice of a Cwmbran Celtic F.C. shirt carried a local resonance; the semi-professional Welsh club has supported independent music venues, and reports noted sales nearly doubled after the performance. “Jackie Down the Line” and “Televised Mind” landed as familiar anchors, while “Starburster” closed the night on a bigger, fulfilling note.
New song “Marianne” hinted at what is ahead as the band prepare their fifth studio album for autumn. With high-profile Los Angeles and New York shows announced, the Reading set read less like a conclusion than a band moving through loss and turning back toward a forward path.
