Freddie Mercury’s Musicland Piano Heads to Auction in Reinhold Mack Collection

The Yamaha C3 grand piano Freddie Mercury used at Musicland Studios in Munich will go to auction as part of Propstore’s sale of the Reinhold Mack Collection. The instrument, used to compose and record Queen material across The Game, Hot Space and The Works as well as solo work, is estimated to reach $528,000 USD.

The piano anchors an 81-lot archive assembled by the band’s longtime producer Reinhold Mack and his son. Alongside it, an AKG C414 EB microphone used for Mercury’s lead and backing vocals carries an estimate of $105,600 USD, and handwritten lyrics for early solo tracks “My Love Is Dangerous” and “Let’s Turn It On” are also offered.

Musicland’s role in rock history gives the sale broader context. During the same era, the studio drew artists including the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Mack has said his family kept the archive for decades for sentimental reasons, not financial ones, and described Mercury as an extension of their household.

The collection opens for public viewing at the Cumberland Hotel in London on September 23, with live bidding scheduled for October 1 and 2. Propstore expects the wider entertainment memorabilia sale to total roughly $4 million USD.
