Hot Chip Detail the Accidental Birth of “Ready For The Floor” as Three Albums Get Reissued

Three of Hot Chip’s defining records—The Warning (2006), Made In The Dark (2008), and One Life Stand (2010)—are being reissued this month, pulling the band back to the moments that shaped their odd, enduring version of electronic pop. Much of that identity crystallized with “Ready For The Floor,” the Grammy-nominated single from Made In The Dark that remains one of their most streamed tracks.

“You wouldn’t really write it down as an idea: let’s have gentle falsetto vocals referencing a Batman film, while singing about a kind of brotherly connectedness—and try to be inspired by UK garage music and Prince,” Alexis Taylor says now. That list of impulses arrived in a demo by Joe Goddard, built on an Arturia Modular V emulation of a Moog System 55. “I’d probably just learnt that you could use a synth to make drum sounds,” Goddard recalls. The beat and main chord pattern came from the same soft synth, arranged on a computer next to his bed, in a tangle of black cables that he admits still traumatises his wife.

The track’s genesis was a studio interruption. Taylor remembers hearing Goddard’s sketch while working on something else: “It was a bit of a surprise to hear all of these sounds.” The collision of a distorted, garage-influenced synth riff with a falsetto melody made it a minor hit that, for a band comfortable shifting instruments and roles, felt like a logical accident. The reissues arrive as a reminder that Hot Chip’s mix-and-match approach—synth lines, live percussion, rhythmic guitar—resisted easy indie/dance binaries long before that became an industry default.
