Instagram Spent Months Recommending Creed’s “Higher”

For months, Instagram’s Stories feature has suggested the same 1999 Creed single to users posting just about anything. The repetition is the story, not the song.

For months, anyone posting to Instagram Stories — a dinner plate, a cat, a sunset — has been handed the same suggested soundtrack: “Higher,” the 1999 Creed single. The recommendation has shown up across wildly unrelated posts, persistent enough that users began noticing the pattern rather than the song.

What makes it worth mentioning isn’t the track itself. “Higher” has been in circulation for a quarter century, and Creed’s place in rock history is settled: colossal commercial reach, durable critical hostility, a fanbase that never needed anyone’s permission. That argument is old. The interesting part is the mechanism behind the suggestion.

Recommendation systems are built on context, behaviour and taste signals. Yet this one kept returning to a single default, month after month, as though the model had settled on an answer and stopped looking for a better one. Nobody at Instagram appears to have explained why.

Platforms are now the most powerful gatekeepers in music, and their choices usually happen quietly, at a scale no radio programmer ever had. Every so often the machinery becomes visible. Here it did, not through a marketing push or a revival campaign, but through sheer repetition.

The exposure is real. The intent is not. A song’s afterlife increasingly gets decided by systems that aren’t listening to it at all.
