When Krill broke up in 2015, the Boston trio left behind a catalog that had quietly shaped a corner of introspective, angular indie rock. Three albums in five years, then a sudden stop—the narrative always felt incomplete. A one-off reunion in 2018 and a full pivot into the band Knot followed, but now Krill are officially back, with a new single and a headlining slot at Boston’s NICE Fest later this month.

“Commemorative Plaque,” their first newly recorded music in a decade, is out today on Exploding In Sound. It’s a drawling, ruminative mood piece anchored by intricately spiky guitars—exactly the kind of off-kilter songwriting that defined their run. Chicago multi-instrumentalist Macie Stewart adds violin, and longtime collaborator Will Greene weaves in saxophone, both without disrupting the band’s core sound.

The single doesn’t announce a grand return. It just continues a conversation that never really ended.
