André 3000 and Big Boi claim the Bay Area rapper’s name is likely to confuse the public, months after a cease-and-desist and an apparent agreement to rebrand.
OutKast have filed a trademark infringement suit against Ovrkast, the Bay Area rapper and producer born Silas Wilson. The case was filed Sept. 16 in federal court in Georgia, according to KQED.
In June 2025, André 3000 and Big Boi sent Wilson a cease-and-desist. Court documents say he then agreed to change his stage name to Overkxst by July 15, 2026, and to stop using Ovrkast across social media, streaming platforms, merchandise, and other commercial spaces. The suit argues the original name is likely to “deceive the public into the false belief” that Wilson’s work is affiliated with OutKast.
The complaint cites a 2025 Rolling Stone interview in which Ovrkast said people often confuse him for the Atlanta duo. On Instagram, he posted a screenshot of AllHipHop’s story with the caption, “I thought it was love? @andre3000 @bigboi (yes this is real),” and added in the comments, “I’m jus a young black man trying to get ahead.”
OutKast are demanding a jury trial. The move follows a similar suit against the EDM duo ATLiens, whose name referenced OutKast’s 1996 album; that case was settled out of court.
