Rick Rubin Directs Eight-Part Jay-Z Documentary, September HBO and MUBI Debut

Jay-Z’s last solo album arrived in 2017, but his catalog returns to the center this fall in a documentary format shaped by Rick Rubin. The eight-part series, officially titled JAŸ-Z In 8, pairs the rapper with Rubin for lengthy conversations about creativity, influences, and the experiences behind a career spanning more than three decades.

Rubin directs and curates the material around individual songs from Jay-Z’s back catalogue. The structure moves through the work song by song, using the selections as anchors for broader discussion of artistic process rather than as a promotional timeline. HBO will carry the series in the United States and Canada; MUBI will stream it globally elsewhere.

The first two episodes arrive on Saturday, September 19, with two more following each Saturday through October 10. That run overlaps with the JAŸ-Z 30 tour, which marks thirty years since Reasonable Doubt, and includes upcoming shows at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Stade de France, and SoFi Stadium.

No full-length studio record has been announced. Aside from occasional one-off tracks and features, the documentary currently stands as the clearest formal return to Jay-Z’s music itself.
