The Sam Mendes-directed Beatles film project is moving closer to its subject’s physical history. A production notice confirms that shooting for The Beatles – A Four Film Cinematic Event will take place outside London’s Abbey Road Studios this summer, using the front courtyard and surrounding street.
The shoot, coordinated with Westminster City Council, plans for around 80 extras and a number of vintage vehicles. The notice has already fueled speculation that the films may reconstruct the crosswalk image from the 1969 Abbey Road album cover. The Beatles recorded 190 of their 210 released songs at the studio between 1962 and 1970.
Mendes’ ambitious project, structured as four interconnected theatrical releases, tells the story from each band member’s perspective. Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Barry Keoghan, and Joseph Quinn star as McCartney, Lennon, Starr, and Harrison. Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne are scripting. The films remain scheduled for April 2028.
