Soundgarden’s Final Album with Chris Cornell Nears Completion

The final Soundgarden album with Chris Cornell has entered the mixing stage. Drummer Matt Cameron shared the update on the Let There Be Talk podcast, confirming that Joe Barresi—who mixed 2012’s King Animal—is handling the eight-song record.

“We don’t really have a release date yet,” Cameron said. “We’re just gonna try to get this thing mixed, get it over the finish line, and then hopefully we’ll have a better idea what’s gonna come next. We’re just taking it one step at a time.”

The tracks are built from demos and rehearsals dating back to 2013, with Cornell’s vocals and guitar parts pulled from those sessions. Cameron noted that some instrumentals without vocals remain, and that guitarist Kim Thayil has expressed interest in developing that material further.

The recording had already been completed with producer Terry Date, who worked with the band on Louder Than Love and Badmotorfinger. Progress stalled for years amid a legal dispute with Cornell’s widow Vicky, but the surviving members reached a reconciliation in 2023, clearing the way for the album’s final stages.

Cameron’s update suggests the project is moving at its own pace, with no rush toward a formal announcement. The record, whenever it surfaces, will stand as the last of Cornell’s studio work with the band.
