Swapmeet Head to Brooklyn After a First Headline Show in Brisbane

The Adelaide band spent the winter at home, toured Australia in September, and now turn up in Brooklyn with a small but telling milestone behind them.

Swapmeet have spent most of the past few months at home in Adelaide, where the season was winter. “We’ve been hibernating,” O’Broin says, and the phrase fits a band that has been writing and waiting rather than performing. That changed in September, when Swapmeet toured Australia and came back with something more useful than a schedule of dates.

The most concrete result came in Brisbane, at the band’s first headline show there. Medlyn describes it as the first time a crowd sang every song back at them, an experience he calls the most surprising of the run. It is a modest milestone by the standards of an industry that prefers to measure careers in numbers, but it marks the point where a local audience stops listening and starts participating.

For a group that has been quiet at home, that shift matters. Hibernation produces songs; it does not tell you whether anyone outside the room knows them. Brisbane answered that question, and the tour gave the band a reason to keep the set list intact rather than rebuild it.

Now Swapmeet are in Brooklyn, working through soundcheck and preparing to play material that has already been tested in front of people who knew the words. The distance between Adelaide in winter and a room in New York is the practical measure of a band’s year.
