Taylor Swift has taken down a Team Trump TikTok that used her song “august,” days after the account posted it with a caption daring her to intervene. The move follows a pattern: earlier this year, the White House’s official TikTok shared a post soundtracked by Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia,” and lifted artwork from her “Eras Tour” for an America 250 promotion. Swift did not respond publicly then. Nor did she act when Trump’s staff altered a Madison Square Garden billboard meme announcing her marriage to Travis Kelce to read “TRUMP IS YOUR PRESIDENT.”

This time, the provocation was explicit. “I’m sure @TaylorSwift is going to be super excited we used her song!” read the caption, signaling a direct challenge. Swift, who endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 election after Trump shared AI-generated images falsely suggesting her support, controls her own masters and publishing—a rare position that gives her unusual leverage to remove her music from platforms or restrict its use. Most artists, bound by label and publisher licensing deals, have far fewer options.

The takedown clarifies the practical limits of that control. While Swift can act against individual posts, a larger question hovers over the fragmentation of rights in the platform era, where political accounts often operate under the same blanket licenses as any other user.
