venbee Releases ‘back to the drawing board’ EP

The singer-songwriter moves toward a lighter, more playful register on a project made with close collaborators after a difficult stretch.

venbee has released a new EP, back to the drawing board, a short collection that marks a clear shift in tone for the songwriter. Where earlier work tended toward heavier emotional terrain, these songs aim for levity, with flashes of humour and a less burdened sense of control.

The project follows a run of singles — “not my day,” “encore, encore,” and “stars (john’s local)” — that established the new direction before the full release. The writing keeps venbee’s ear for texture and detail, but the mood is structured differently.

Speaking about the record, venbee was direct about the contrast with the past four years. “I decided to put my big girl pants on and just get on with it, got all my mates who I love and trust, and had a shit ton of fun,” she said. “Most of the songs are light hearted, which is a bit of a change for me.”

venbee will play a residency at Bermondsey Social Club in October. back to the drawing board is out now.
