The Gentilly Stage booking put the two Love This Giant collaborators back in direct proximity, and both sets incorporated the other’s presence with no pretense.
The Gentilly Stage at New Orleans Jazz Fest closed Sunday with back-to-back sets from St. Vincent and David Byrne. The scheduling made practical and artistic sense: the two toured together in 2013 for their collaborative album Love This Giant, and the Jazz Fest layout let them step into each other’s performances without ceremony.
St. Vincent brought Byrne out during her set for a run through Talking Heads’ “Wild Wild Life,” a song they last performed on that tour. Byrne returned the gesture during his own set, inviting Annie Clark to sing “Air.” Both moments were captured on attendee-shot video.
The brief overlap arrives amid active stretches for both. Byrne has added new tour dates, with a show at Forest Hills Stadium in New York on September 19 now on the calendar. St. Vincent continues to announce orchestral performances in pieces; one of them lands at David Geffen Hall on July 2, where she’ll perform with the New York Philharmonic.
