The final defendant in the 2021 killing of the Memphis rapper received a 20-year sentence Friday, closing a chapter that moved through four trials and a life sentence for the gunman.
The last unresolved charge in the Young Dolph murder case was put to rest Friday. Cornelius Smith Jr. pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in a Memphis courtroom, accepting a 20-year sentence with no possibility of early release. The plea deal officially closes the prosecution of four people tied to the rapper’s death.
Smith’s admission was not a surprise. He had already testified that he and Justin Johnson shot Young Dolph during a daytime ambush at a local bakery in November 2021. That testimony helped secure Johnson’s conviction and life sentence. Smith, who initially faced a first-degree murder charge, saw those heavier counts dropped in exchange for his cooperation.
The case spiraled outward after the killing. Hernandez Govan, accused of orchestrating the hit, was acquitted in August 2025. Jemarcus Johnson, brother of the convicted gunman, earlier pleaded guilty to three counts of accessory after the fact and was sentenced to diversion and community service. With Smith’s plea, every legal strand has been tied off.
District Attorney Steve Mulroy acknowledged the weight of the moment. “Young Dolph was a beloved member of this community, his death a tragedy, his murder an outrage,” he said in a statement. Deputy DA Paul Hagerman called Smith’s actions “inexcusable” but noted his testimony was “essential to the State’s case.”
The rapper, born Adolph Thornton Jr., had been in Memphis that day to hand out turkeys to neighbors, something he did each year. That detail keeps resurfacing, maybe because it draws a line between how he lived and the circumstances of his death. The trial records are closed now, but that part stays hard to reconcile.
