After a 14-year absence, a new James Bond game from the studio behind Hitman sold through quickly and earned strong reviews.
Fourteen years without a James Bond game created a quiet kind of demand. When 007 First Light launched this week, the numbers made that demand visible. IO Interactive confirmed the title sold 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours.
The Danish studio, known for the precise stealth sandboxes of the Hitman series, took on a young Bond for this action-adventure. The result carries obvious lineage from IO’s past work, but critics also noted shades of Uncharted and Batman: Arkham in the mix of combat, traversal, and stealth. Metacritic aggregates an 87, reflecting a reception that was warm without being breathless.
The game is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. A Switch 2 version follows on September 30, available for pre-order already. That Nintendo slot signals a wider play for a franchise that has mostly stayed parked in film and nostalgia. IO’s take strips Bond back to an origin story, betting that players would show up for something before the tuxedo. The opening day suggests the bet paid off.
