The frontman says the Dopethrone cut owes a debt to the Prince of Darkness.
In a new interview about the making of Electric Wizard’s 2000 album Dopethrone, frontman Jus Oborn traced one of the record’s most venomous tracks back to a name that looms over all of heavy metal. According to Oborn, “We Hate You” drew inspiration, in a sense, from Ozzy Osbourne.
The revelation came via Metal Injection, where Oborn discussed the album’s creation. Dopethrone has long stood as a monolith of doom, its crushing riffs and misanthropic atmosphere setting a standard for the genre. “We Hate You,” with its searing, repetitive refrain, encapsulated the record’s hostility. To hear that Ozzy had a hand in shaping that bitterness adds a peculiar layer.
Obvious as Ozzy’s influence might be across metal, the connection here isn’t about borrowing a riff or a vocal line. Osbourne’s legacy, particularly his ability to channel personal demons into something grimly theatrical, seems to have crept into the DNA of Electric Wizard’s sound. No further details were given about how exactly the influence manifested, but the comment alone is enough to send fans back to the track with fresh ears.
Dopethrone remains essential, and “We Hate You” is a centerpiece. That Oborn would single out Ozzy in relation to it reinforces how deeply rooted even the most extreme branches of doom metal are in the classic heaviness of Black Sabbath.
