The Brainfeeder boss revives his rap alias for a new single that lands on the soundtrack to Lionsgate film The Furious, with production from Little Snake.
Flying Lotus is back behind the Captain Murphy mask. The producer has resurrected the serio-comic rap persona for “Mudhole,” a new single out now. The track features Brainfeeder labelmate Little Snake on production and appears on the soundtrack for The Furious, a Lionsgate film directed by Kenji Tanigaki.
The release lands during a particularly active stretch. FlyLo’s BIG MAMA EP arrived earlier this year through Brainfeeder, and a Record Store Day reissue of his debut album 1983 put his earliest work back in circulation. The “Mudhole” drop shows the label ecosystem at work, pulling in a Brainfeeder artist for a side-step that doesn’t mirror the heady jazz and electronic shapes of the main Flying Lotus catalog. Instead, it’s a straight rap moment, built with a theatrical size that suits the screen.
The producer has a history of shape-shifting, and bringing back Captain Murphy now feels less like a revival and more like a tool deployed for a specific context. Later this summer, Flying Lotus leads a full live band for a bi-coastal residency at the Blue Note Jazz Clubs in New York City and Los Angeles. That booking signals a different mode entirely. Between a soundtrack feature, an EP, a reissue, and a jazz residency, the moves scan as deliberate, not scattered. They reflect an artist who runs a label like a studio, timing releases to place his own music in distinct rooms.
