The Manchester alt-rock band release a four-track EP recorded in a two-week underground session, showcasing a sound shaped by The Black Keys, Dr Feelgood, and The Killers.
Manchester’s music circuit continues to turn out bands that resist easy categorisation. Malcom, a four-piece that has already caught attention through BBC Introducing and a forceful showing at The Great Escape, today release their new EP, Step Out Of The Light.
Recorded over a fortnight in an underground central Manchester studio with producer David Radahd-Jones, the four tracks lean into alt-rock with a directness that feels deliberate. Frontman Caz Donaghy, originally from Belfast, leads the band alongside twin guitarists Evan and Max Morgan and drummer Alfie Summersgill. The EP opens with the live staple ‘Hard Working Blues’ and moves through ‘God Ain’t Gonna Forgive Me’, ‘Running’, and ‘Silver Tongues’.
The title suggests a self-conscious move. “It’s about finding our own sound and coming forward with something that is truly us,” the band explain. “Not just following the trends.” The references — The Black Keys, Dr Feelgood, The Killers — are worn lightly; raucous harmonica and sharp guitar tones cut across the songs rather than mimic them.
The EP arrives with the band’s summer plans still unfolding, but it already functions as a statement of intent from a group that understands the value of working fast and trusting instinct.
