Serj Tankian Responds to Israel’s Recognition of the Armenian Genocide

Serj Tankian issued a terse reaction to Israel’s official recognition of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, saying, “Using our history, our genocide, our pain to their advantage.”

Israel has formally recognized the 1915 Armenian Genocide, drawing a sharp response from System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian. The musician, a longtime advocate for international recognition, commented through a brief public statement.

“Using our history, our genocide, our pain to their advantage,” Tankian said. The line suggests he views the move as instrumental, not an expression of genuine historical acknowledgment.

Tankian, whose grandparents survived the genocide, has spent decades pressing governments worldwide to officially recognize the Ottoman-era slaughter of 1.5 million Armenians. His band’s 2020 singles “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz” raised funds for Armenia during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He has rarely hesitated to challenge political figures—whether Turkish officials denying the genocide or Western governments that avoided the term.

Israel long refrained from formal recognition, partly due to diplomatic relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan. The decision marks a shift, but Tankian’s reaction signals that for many Armenians, timing and motive matter as much as the declaration itself. No further comment has been released.
