Ali G Returns Unannounced: Sacha Baron Cohen Readies Secretly Shot Film for October

Sacha Baron Cohen is reviving Ali G, the clueless Staines rudeboy who helped launch his career in the late ’90s. A new feature, Ali G: Who Iz I?, will open in theaters on October 23rd via Amazon MGM Studios. Cohen announced the project in character with a spray-painted title reveal and the kind of mangled calendar logic the persona was built on.

Directed and shot in the same undercover style as Borat and its sequel, the film was completed without public knowledge. The method — placing an absurd construct into real environments — relies on surprise, and Cohen has managed to keep the production entirely quiet until now. Whether the result captures the novelty of the original or simply extends a formula will depend on the unwitting participants he landed this time.

Ali G first appeared on Britain’s The 11 O’Clock Show in 1998 and quickly became a cultural oddity that blurred the lines between parody, performance, and the actual dancefloor aspirations of UK garage and hip-hop. His 2002 feature Ali G Indahouse pushed the character into narrative farce. Later interviews on Da Ali G Show brought the shtick to the US, where Cohen cornered figures like Noam Chomsky, Buzz Aldrin, David Beckham, and Donald Trump. The hyper-stylized street slang and deadpan ignorance turned those encounters into comedy that often said more about the subject’s discomfort than the questions themselves.

Two decades after the last proper Ali G project, the return isn’t exactly a nostalgia play — it’s a stress test of a character whose irony once felt sharp and whose targets now live in a media ecosystem that outpaces satire daily.
