Kevin Morby and Katie Crutchfield Welcome Their First Child

The Waxahatchee singer gave birth shortly after Morby returned from a European tour. The couple’s new arrival means Morby will miss this weekend’s Eaux Claires festival.

The singer-songwriters Kevin Morby and Katie Crutchfield, who records as Waxahatchee, are now parents. Morby announced the birth of their first child on Tuesday, writing on his Substack that the baby arrived two weeks early.

Crutchfield had revealed her pregnancy in April during a co-headlining tour with MJ Lenderman, closing a show by introducing a song about having a baby. Morby said he returned from a European tour “just in time” — his partner’s water broke about eight hours after he walked through the door. “I like to think that the little guy waited for me,” he added. The family has been playing Grouper’s “Heavy Water/I’d Rather Be Sleeping” on repeat.

Morby will skip a scheduled set at Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner’s Eaux Claires Festival this weekend. He said he was looking forward to the performance, but noted “we will have lots of jamming in our futures.” On the festival’s updated schedule, that slot now lists a performer named “Bon.”
