Marlon Jackson Co-Producing Joe Jackson Documentary for BLK Prime

A documentary on Joe Jackson, the domineering father and manager behind the Jackson 5 and the early solo breakthroughs of Michael and Janet, is in development with son Marlon Jackson attached. The as-yet-untitled series will air on BLK Prime, though no release date has been given.

Announced via the Jacksons’ Instagram, the project is framed as an intimate look at “the man whose vision helped shape our family and its musical legacy.” Marlon, one of the few siblings still publicly shaping their father’s story, said the series will offer “a distinctive and accurate portrayal of the man behind our family.”

The timing is pointed. The recent Michael Jackson biopic doubled down on Joe’s reputation as a cruel disciplinarian, showing beatings and psychological pressure. Michael himself had long spoken of childhood abuse, including being struck with iron cords. Joe later disputed the characterization: “I whipped him with a switch and a belt. I never beat him — you beat somebody with a stick.” By adulthood, most of the Jackson children had fired him as their manager.

Marlon’s involvement gestures toward a corrective: a family member’s attempt to complicate the harsh one-dimensional portrait. After Joe died of cancer in 2018, Janet Jackson acknowledged his severity while also crediting his drive for their global success. The documentary, then, lands in the middle of an unsettled conversation about what Joe built — and what it cost.
