gash Release a Short, Haunted New Single, “risking heaven”

Last month, Eau Claire’s gash announced at least you know what you’re laughing at with “good and bad,” a collagist burst of sound. The album arrives September 25 via Angel Tapes and Fire Talk, and today they’ve shared a second preview that works on an entirely different scale.

“risking heaven” is brief—just over sixty seconds—and almost ascetic compared to its predecessor. There are no bursts of brass or screamed textures here. Instead, acoustic guitar and eerie synths frame Logan Nyberg’s voice, bruised and direct, as he delivers a single, gripping vignette: “And on my bike at night/ I’m risking heaven for you.” It’s a sparse, haunted moment that doesn’t try to be more than it is.

The accompanying video makes eyeballs its central motif, a visual choice that suits the track’s intimate unease. While “good and bad” threw everything at the wall, “risking heaven” holds almost everything back, and that restraint gives it weight. The song doesn’t collapse so much as it evaporates, leaving behind the melody and the quiet tension of that one image—a bike, night air, a risk taken for someone.
