Neil Peart Documentary ‘No One’s Disciple’ to Feature Drummers Danny Carey, Chad Smith, Stewart Copeland

A new documentary on Neil Peart will arrive this fall, tracing the late Rush drummer’s technique and influence through rare footage and performances. Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple premieres September 23 on CBC, with Republic Pictures handling distribution outside Canada.

Directed by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn (Banger Films) and produced with Elevation Pictures, the film includes appearances by Rush bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, who reflect on their decades-long collaboration. An all-star group of drummers—Danny Carey (Tool), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Stewart Copeland (The Police)—reinterpret Peart’s compositions. The three previously joined Lee and Lifeson at the 2022 Taylor Hawkins memorial concerts; Smith and the late Hawkins had also organized a Peart tribute in 2020 benefiting brain tumor research at Cedars-Sinai.

Peart’s playing—defined by odd time signatures, exacting precision, and an ever-expanding kit—set a benchmark in rock. The documentary draws on archival interviews, including Peart’s own words about his sense of responsibility as a drummer. The premiere lands during a period of renewed activity for Rush: Lee and Lifeson returned to the road in June for the Fifty Something tour, their first shows under the Rush name since Peart’s death in 2020, with drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Loren Gold rounding out the lineup.
