Gerard Way Performs with Frozen Soul at Los Angeles Show

The divide between underground metal and big-tent rock rarely narrows in public. On April 17, it did, briefly, when My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way appeared onstage with Texas death metal band Frozen Soul at The Novo in Los Angeles.

Pro-shot footage from the set shows Way joining the band mid-performance, a guest turn that adds a pointed crossover footnote to Frozen Soul’s growing live reputation. The group, known for bulldozing, Bolt Thrower-indebted death metal, has been steadily rising since their 2021 debut Crypt of Ice, and an unscheduled appearance by a figure as culturally distant as Way reads less like novelty and more like a signal of how far their draw now extends.

Way, for his part, has no recorded history with the genre’s heavier edges, but his emo-punk iconography sits comfortably enough alongside the contrasting weight of Frozen Soul’s sound. The collaboration was direct and unrehearsed-looking—exactly the kind of live moment that thrives when the barrier between scene gatekeeping and genuine curiosity erodes, even for three minutes.
