Red Velvet Release Mini Album ‘Velvet Summer’

Red Velvet have released a new mini album, Velvet Summer, via SM Entertainment. The five-track project arrives two years after the group’s 2024 release Cosmic, a relatively quiet stretch by the standards of a unit that has spent over a decade refining one of K-pop’s most distinctive catalogues.

The sonic palette this time stretches from bossa nova and reggae to dance-pop and acoustic textures, threaded with classical touches. The result is less a seasonal novelty and more a continuation of the group’s ability to layer mood and rhythm without losing cohesion. JOY, who has developed as a songwriter through her solo work, wrote the lyrics for both “Surfin’ Boy” and “Hawaii,” bringing a more direct personal stamp to the project.

A video for “Surfin’ Boy” accompanies the release. The track merges mellow bossa guitar and languid reggae phrasing with a crisp house groove—a combination that sidesteps cliché and lands somewhere cooler. With Velvet Summer, Red Velvet don’t so much reinvent their sound as sharpen it, moving forward with the kind of restraint that makes a decade-long run look natural.
