Soleil Moon Frye’s Shifty Shellshock Documentary Adds Appian Way and Dax Dasilva

Soleil Moon Frye’s documentary about her relationship with late Crazy Town frontman Shifty Shellshock has new institutional backing. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and producer-entrepreneur Dax Dasilva have joined *Werewolf in the Waves* as executive producers, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Frye directed the film, which has already screened at several festivals.

Frye and Shellshock, born Seth Binzer, had known each other since adolescence. What began as an effort to document his musical comeback evolved into a more intimate chronicle of addiction, mental-health struggles, friendship and loss. Shellshock died June 24, 2024, at 49.

That personal frame separates *Werewolf in the Waves* from conventional music documentary territory. Shellshock’s public life was shaped first by Crazy Town’s 2000 debut *The Gift of Game*, whose single “Butterfly” — built around a sample of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Pretty Little Ditty” — became a massive 2001 hit. The success proved hard to replicate, and his later years became inseparable from public struggles with substance abuse.

Frye has said the project carried Shellshock’s own aim: to share his journey so that people facing addiction and mental health challenges might feel less alone. She described Dasilva as feeling “incredibly meaningful” to that mission, adding, “I am thrilled that he is helping us carry Seth’s legacy forward.”

The partnership also reconnects Frye with Appian Way, which worked with her on *Kid 90*, the 2021 documentary built from her childhood home-video archive. *Werewolf in the Waves* now moves ahead with a team that includes Shellshock’s sisters, Aubrey Binzer and Mieke Binzer Dumont, as executive producers.
