This Is Lorelei’s New Album Resists the Road-Record Label

Nate Amos has released three This Is Lorelei albums in as many years, but he doesn’t want the latest one reduced to where it was written. The Singer in My Band started on highways, B roads and venue car parks, during what Amos calls “long boring drives.” He doesn’t call it a road record. “Most of the songs did come out of long boring drives,” he says, “but I have a hard time actually writing – like committing to lyrics – on the road.” The process was more mental sketch than open-highway revelation.

The album moves away from the restless energy of Box for Buddy, Box for Star and Holo Boy. The sound is twangier and tighter, with fewer words and fewer sounds, as Amos puts it. “Less me me me stuff.” It opens with I Will Eat My Heart in the Morning Light, a sober, self-assured piece that includes the line “I know there must be better men but I’m not the kind to hide.” Sailing (Your Baby’s Down) carries go
