Tin Lung Introduces Analog Electronic Project on Debut EP ‘EP 1’

Rett Smith’s first release under the name Tin Lung is not another rock record. EP 1, out via Lavoir Records, is a four-track electronic project created without software instruments or AI. That analog-only approach shapes the record’s texture, pulling it away from the polish of much current electronic production.

The Los Angeles musician describes the project as “my music in its purest form.” Tin Lung’s sound sits between the desolate, dystopian atmospheres of Burial and Boards of Canada and the deconstructed industrial edge of early Arca. The EP was recorded at Smith’s own Tularosa Sound studio in Los Angeles and mastered by frequent collaborator Stefan Brown at Abbey Road Studios in London. Smith’s past work includes guitar on Hudson Mohawke’s Cry Sugar, but EP 1 leaves that rock vocabulary behind.

The release is positioned as the opening transmission from a larger body of work, with a debut full-length expected in March 2027. That leaves room for Tin Lung to evolve, but EP 1 already establishes the project as a distinct creative lane rather than a side note to Smith’s existing catalog.
