Shygirl Details the Short Film Script Behind the ‘Lucky’ Video

The video for ‘Lucky (Hymn)’ was never intended to stand alone. Shygirl has explained that the clip belongs to a wider fictional narrative, with further music videos planned as expanded scenes from a short film script she wrote and developed with her partner.

In a TikTok posted on 14th September, she addressed discussion around the video’s motivations. “We still have more music videos to make, and they are based on a short film script that I wrote and developed alongside my partner,” she said. The short film remains in its script phase, but its characters are already taking shape through the visuals. Co-directed by Shygirl and Austen Taylor Pease, the ‘Lucky’ video brings her character Alyse together with Kay.

Action cinema has been a key reference for the developing arc. Shygirl said its clear narrative journeys let an audience root for a character through situations that might otherwise feel unbearable. Exploring violence and aggression through fiction, she added, has been “such a cathartic release” for emotions and situations that often lack a physical outlet in daily life.

The interest also draws on experiences of vulnerability. “As a woman going through life, or as someone of colour, or someone who is in a vulnerable position, you’re constantly told to fend for yourself, to be careful, to watch out for danger,” she said. “And in this arena, in this music video, I face it.”

‘Lucky (Hymn)’ appears on Shygirl’s forthcoming album ‘Swallow!’, due on 6th November via Because Music. The next videos have not been dated, but the track now works as one chapter in a story still being built.
