At Tokyo’s Belluna Dome, The Weeknd brought out Yoko Takahashi to debut a new track built around the Neon Genesis Evangelion theme, with visuals by Yoko Taro.
At the opening night of the latest leg of his After Hours Til Dawn Stadium Tour in Tokyo, The Weeknd introduced an unreleased song built on one of anime’s most recognizable themes. He performed it with Yoko Takahashi, the singer who made “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” synonymous with Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The track’s title and release date have not been announced. Video from the September 19 show at Belluna Dome shows Tesfaye sharing the stage with Takahashi while a visual by Yoko Taro mixes imagery from Evangelion and NieR:Automata, the game Taro directed.
Tesfaye also stepped back at one point to let Takahashi perform “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” on her own. He remained at the rear of the stage, listening.
The Tokyo date begins what is likely the final stretch of a tour that started in 2022. Since then, The Weeknd has released the soundtrack to HBO’s The Idol and, in 2025, Hurry Up Tomorrow, the album he has framed as his last under that name. The latter also arrived with a film by Trey Edward Shults, starring Barry Keoghan, Jenna Ortega and Tesfaye.
