RTVE President Asks Spain to Maintain Eurovision Suspension

Spain’s public broadcaster may stay out of Eurovision for another year. RTVE president José Pablo López has backed maintaining the broadcaster’s suspension from the contest and will ask the board to confirm that position. The final decision has not yet been made.

The request keeps Spain on the sidelines of Europe’s largest televised music competition. RTVE has not given a public reason for the suspension, and López’s position does not close the question. It moves the issue into an institutional vote. If the board agrees, Spain will remain absent from the 2027 edition; if it rejects the recommendation, the broadcaster would need to restart a selection process it has paused.

The standoff is less about a single artist or song than about the broadcaster’s relationship to the contest. Eurovision remains a major cultural platform, but national participation is ultimately a decision made by state media, not by audiences. For now, Spain’s return is not a given.
