BNXN’s new six-track project is a deliberate extension of last year’s ‘CAPTAIN’ rather than a sequel, arriving after his Sarz collaboration and a track from Asake that restarted the whole idea.
BNXN has released ‘Still In Charge’, a six-track project he frames as an extension of last year’s album ‘CAPTAIN’ rather than a follow-up to it. The Nigerian singer, 29, has said he wanted ‘CAPTAIN’ to keep its own space instead of being absorbed into a second album, and that the new record grew out of what happened after it.
The timing follows ‘The Game Needs Us’, his May collaboration with producer Sarz, which BNXN has described as a signal that listeners missed that particular sound. The push to record again came from Asake, who sent him the track “Eja Meja.” That became the starting point. Asake and FOLA both feature on ‘Still In Charge’, which moves between love, reflection, ambition and enjoyment.
BNXN sits within Nigeria’s Afrofusion generation, pulling from Afrobeats and R&B without treating either as a boundary. Since his debut album ‘Sincerely, Benson’, he has built a reputation for songwriting that lets vulnerability sit next to a hook. ‘CAPTAIN’ sharpened that instinct; this project continues it.
The October 1 release date was chosen around a number. BNXN says he was approaching half a billion Spotify streams for the year, counted from January 1 to September 30, and wanted the project to land on that marker, with a new management and team behind him. The title reads less like a boast than a receipt.
