The Dublin group’s new single leans into early-2000s R&B as they prepare a seven-track EP for Jorja Smith’s FAMM imprint, due November 6th.
Bricknasty have released ‘the dom perignons’, a new single from ‘forever’, the Dublin group’s EP due November 6th via Jorja Smith’s FAMM imprint. The seven-track project was written and completed in a matter of weeks, a timeline that leaves little room for second-guessing.
That speed reads as a decision rather than a constraint. Bricknasty’s early mixtapes traded on wide-ranging eclecticism, pulling from whatever sources suited them. A run of singles this summer narrowed the frame. On ‘the dom perignons’, the reference point is the buoyant, glossy R&B of the early 2000s: bright electronics, melody written to land fast, a pop instinct the band does not treat as a compromise.
Fatboy of the group puts it plainly: “Before, we made it rocket science, but it’s not rocket science. It’s easy, just nice riffs, nice parts…” Whether ‘forever’ sustains that discipline across seven tracks is the open question. What the single settles is smaller and more useful: a band that has stopped equating complication with ambition.
