EGOISM Follow a Sold-Out Tour With ‘It Takes Two’

The Sydney trio return with a single built around desire and the risks that come with it, arriving on the back of a sold-out run of shows.

EGOISM have released a new single, ‘It Takes Two’, and the timing is telling. The Sydney trio are coming off a sold-out tour, a point when most bands either retreat to write or rush out something upbeat to keep the momentum visible. Instead they have put out a song about temptation: wanting something, knowing the cost, going ahead anyway.

That subject suits a three-piece. Desire is a structural problem as much as a lyrical one, and a trio has fewer places to hide it. EGOISM have built their reputation on the live side first, which makes the decision to follow a sold-out run with a track about risk rather than triumph feel deliberate rather than accidental. Temptation, in this framing, is less a romantic theme than a way of describing the position the band are in.

The single arrives without a broader announcement attached, so there is no album to measure it against yet and no sense of how it sits inside a larger record. On its own terms, it does what a standalone release should: it states a preoccupation clearly and leaves the question of where it leads open.
