The Balming Tiger member has released ‘Ice King’, the second and last pre-release single before his debut solo album arrives on 20th October.
Wonjin has released ‘Ice King’, the second and final pre-release single from his debut solo album ‘Mangsangrok’, due 20th October. The track follows ‘Candy’, the album’s lead single, which arrived with a one-take video performed by a full band.
Two singles, one filmed in a single unbroken take, is enough to suggest the record is being positioned as a performance-forward statement rather than a collection of tracks. That distinction matters for an artist whose public identity has been shaped by a group.
Wonjin is a member of Balming Tiger, the Seoul collective whose output has resisted easy categorisation: rap, pop, electronic and art-school provocation folded into a single, deliberately unstable whole. Solo work from within that structure invites the obvious question of what remains when the collective’s shared sensibility is removed. The pre-release strategy here answers part of it in advance, putting the songs out first and letting the album land as a body of work rather than a surprise.
‘Mangsangrok’ is his first solo album. Whether it functions as an extension of Balming Tiger’s methods or a deliberate break from them is the thing worth listening for. The record arrives 20th October, with two tracks already public and the full-band framing of ‘Candy’ setting the terms.
