The Texas thrash band returns with two songs, “Precinct 3” and “Scavenger,” and a new album slated for next spring.
Power Trip have released “Precinct 3” and “Scavenger,” their first new music since Riley Gale died in 2020. The double single arrives via Blue Grape, with a full-length album planned for next spring. “Precinct 3” is accompanied by a video directed by Eric Richter.
The band’s return has been taking shape since they reunited in late 2023 with Seth Gilmore on vocals. Gilmore is a longtime friend of the group and the frontman of Skourge and Fugitive, a choice that avoids the dead end of trying to replace Gale outright. Jacob Hansen produced the new tracks, with founding guitarist Blake Ibanez co-producing.
In a press release, Ibanez described writing toward Gale’s absence rather than around it: “When we were writing this, we wondered what Riley would have wanted to write about. So once we decided on that approach, it honestly came really easily.”
That framing carries weight. Gale’s catalog has been kept alive by others in the years since his death, cited and covered by bands that grew up on it. Releasing new songs instead of touring the old ones is a different kind of claim, that Power Trip remain a working band rather than a tribute to themselves. The record due next spring will show how far that holds.
