Mexican Summer’s Second Compilation, Everybody’s Got A Song To Sing, Is Out Now

The Brooklyn label follows last year’s Sitting On The Moon with a twelve-track sequel that places Cate Le Bon and L’Rain beside newer and lesser-known names on its roster.

Mexican Summer released Everybody’s Got A Song To Sing today, a twelve-track compilation and the second volume in a series that began last year with Sitting On The Moon. That first instalment ran on Robert Lester Folsom, Zsela and Dungen. The sequel keeps the format and broadens the cast.

Cate Le Bon contributes “Something Fragile,” L’Rain opens the record with “Muney,” and Starcleaner Reunion appears with “On The Curve.” Around them the Brooklyn label assembles No Joy, whose “Bamboo” features Morgan Greenwood; Sessa, working with Marina Nemésio on “Tomara Seja Assim”; Alex Izenberg, Dan English, Andy Boay, Orchid Salon and Colin Broster. Corridos Ketamina’s “Arcosanti” brings in Nico Malva and so02, and the Ukrainian project СОЮЗ closes the run of new material with “Na dosvitku.”

What makes the tracklist worth reading rather than skimming is its range. A label compilation usually functions as a sampler, a way of pushing one or two signings while the rest fills space. Here the interest lies in the mismatch: established songwriters with distinct catalogues set against names that will be unfamiliar to most listeners, and material that moves between English, Portuguese, Spanish and Ukrainian across a single record.

Two volumes in two years also suggests Mexican Summer is treating the compilation as a recurring form rather than a one-off gesture, a periodic inventory of what the label is actually releasing instead of a retrospective. The full album is available now.
