Dead Man’s Bones Tease an October 27 Announcement After 17 Years

The duo of Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields have pointed to a date without saying what it holds, and the hints so far have come mostly from outside the band.

Dead Man’s Bones have spent seventeen years as a one-album project. That may be about to change. The duo of Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields have pointed toward an announcement on October 27, without specifying what it contains.

The signal has come less from the band than from Gosling’s partner, Eva Mendes, who shared an Instagram post featuring the group’s music alongside the line, “Sure wish they had new music coming out…” A follow-up post read, “He came through on his promise to me.” The band’s own tease has been limited to the date, leaving the scope of any return unconfirmed: a single, a record, a performance, none of it verified.

Timing does some of the work. An October 27 announcement lands four days before Halloween, the one window each year that suits a project built on the supernatural. Whether that is strategy or coincidence is unclear, but the band’s subject matter has always had a season.

Dead Man’s Bones grew from Gosling and Shields’ shared fascination with ghosts and the occult, and their 2009 self-titled debut matched that preoccupation. Its gothic folk and theatrical rock treated the macabre as something earnest rather than camp, and it was not a hit by any commercial measure. It gathered a cult following anyway, sustained by listeners who found the record’s strangeness worth returning to.

Seventeen years is long enough that the project reads now as an anomaly rather than a career. The October date will indicate whether it stays that way.
