A planned Bay Area cultural center will bring together Jerry Garcia’s music, visual art, instruments and archive, with attention to the Grateful Dead’s live sound innovations and Garcia’s environmental advocacy.
The Jerry Garcia Music Arts Center is being planned for the San Francisco Bay Area. The Garcia family announced the project on Oct. 23 with archival platform Starchive and project coordinator Christopher McCutcheon. It is conceived as a working cultural center rather than a traditional museum, with Garcia’s music, visual art, artifacts and conservation work treated as connected parts of one artistic life.
The proposed facility would include a research library and physical archive open to fans, a digital preservation hub, galleries for Garcia’s art and instruments, and exhibitions tracing the blues, folk, country and jazz traditions that informed his work. It would also examine the Grateful Dead’s advances in live concert sound design, an element of the band’s history that is often heard but rarely given institutional attention.
A performance center and screening room would host music and film, while an artist-in-residence program would support recording and visual arts. Environmental exhibits would reflect Garcia’s advocacy for coral reefs and rainforests. Charitable efforts would focus on ocean conservation, music education and the arts. The family is asking Garcia’s heirs to contribute materials and will review fan donations for the collection.
“Music and art naturally build community,” Manasha Garcia said in the announcement. The center’s architectural plans and programming will be announced as the project develops. The news follows the August announcement of Eyes of the World: The Jerry Garcia Experience, a planned 40,000-square-foot immersive exhibition set to launch in San Francisco in early 2027 before traveling to other U.S. cities.
