Atomic Cherry Lives the Half-Life on Somewhere in Between

The Istanbul artist’s debut single stays inside the unfinished change of everyday exhaustion, where sleep fails to restore and the same day keeps returning.

Atomic Cherry is the project of Ece Eroğlu, an Istanbul-based artist who writes, sings, records, produces, mixes and masters everything herself. Her debut single Somewhere in Between arrived this month as the first statement from a forthcoming EP. The work stays close to the room it was made in. Nothing is handed off. The voice, the chords and the final master all carry the same hand.

In nuclear physics a half-life is the measured time it takes for half the atoms in a sample to decay. During that interval the material is neither the original isotope nor the new one. The nucleus has begun to change and has not finished. Energy leaves, yet the transformation remains incomplete. Atomic Cherry’s name already sits inside that interval. The song inhabits the same unfinished condition.

Somewhere in Between is about the psychological half-life of depression and burnout. It names the daily limbo in which a person is no longer the version of themselves who made plans and not yet anyone else. Sleep fails to restore. Desire goes strange. The day repeats without advancing. The verses supply the evidence. “I slept for ten hours and woke up at two” opens the track and immediately places the listener inside a night that delivered nothing. “I dreamed of a life I was too tired to do” follows, a sentence that refuses both ambition and self-pity. The plans were cancelled because they were never wanted. The things once wanted now look strange. Everything circles and ends up the same. The chorus returns to the same two lines: “Even I barely know my name” and “Don’t ask me where I’ve been / I’m somewhere in between.” The identity has not vanished. It has simply become hard to locate.

The production never tries to lift the condition. Soft synth chords and a low bass sit under a slow electronic pulse. The tempo stays unhurried. A crystalline arpeggio enters and repeats like a thought that will not leave. Wide reverb places the whole arrangement behind glass. The listener hears the room and the distance at the same time. The voice stays close and quiet, almost spoken from the edge of sleep. On the chorus it rises into thin, overlapping harmonies that still refuse to open the window. In the middle the beat dissolves. Layered whispers surface. “I’m so tired.” “Yeah, I’m sick of it.” The exhaustion becomes spatial. The final return of the chorus carries the echo of “is the same,” sealing the loop rather than breaking it.

What the single understands is that the limbo is not dramatic. It is ordinary and circular. The self is bored of itself and too tired to change. The waiting continues for a shift that the brain does not deliver. Atomic Cherry keeps the song inside that interval, where the atom has already started to decay and the new form has not arrived.
