The Manchester singer and poet claims the voyage for herself, writing a late-night soul record that treats the ending as a doorway.
Princess Arinola Adegbite works as BITEZ, a Manchester artist with British Jamaican Nigerian roots and a practice that already ran through poetry, film, and performance before the records began. She was named Manchester Young Creative of the Year in 2021. In 2023 her collection Algorithms of Meaning took an Eric Gregory Award from the Society of Authors. The music followed the page, and you can still hear that order in the writing. Vintage Destiny, her 2023 debut EP, later found a curious second life on British Airways flights. Eat My Heart arrived in 2025. She has played Glastonbury, Band on the Wall, the British Museum, Manchester Jazz Festival, Shambala, and rooms that reward a voice more than a campaign. The tone is smoky and close. Nina Simone, Sade, Erykah Badu, and André 3000 sit somewhere behind it, not as costume, as temperature.
Old coastal houses keep a narrow platform on the roof called a widow’s walk. Captains’ wives used it to scan the water for a mast that might never come back. The structure survives as ornament, a leftover from waiting. BITEZ calls this single Mrs. Odysseus (Only the Beginning) and then steps off that roof. The artwork hangs a white window in open sky, curtains, a tiled roof, a room with no wall around it, floating above one fat cloud. Nobody is keeping watch from a widow’s walk. The house has come loose. The voyage has changed hands.
That image does the same work as the title. The Odyssey has always belonged to the man who travels and the woman who stays. Penelope kept the story alive by weaving a shroud in daylight and picking it apart after dark, so the ending could be postponed. BITEZ keeps the patience and drops the pause. The first line arrives like a correction. You thought it would be the end. It was only the beginning. Later she makes the refusal plain. You thought I wouldn’t try, but I refused to stop. The myth is still in the room. The lookout has become a departure gate.
The track moves at a low pulse, somewhere near 80, the tempo of a head nod rather than a chase. A rounded kick sits under a dry snare that lands just behind the beat, human enough to feel lived in. Electric piano carries the harmony with a warm, slightly trembling body, the kind of chord that remembers jazz without quoting it. Sub-bass fills the floor and stays polite. Vinyl crackle runs through the mix like dust in late light. The production is lo-fi on purpose, a modern cut given analog grain so the intimacy has somewhere to sit.
Her voice does the heavy lifting. It stays close to the mic, clean against that dirtied bed, with R&B turns that never show off for their own sake. In the chorus the layers thicken. Soft stacked parts bloom behind her like a muffled choir, gospel heat turned down until it feels private. The song holds one emotional temperature from the first bar to the last. No late drop. No radio lift. Restraint becomes the form. The feeling arrives because the arrangement leaves space for it.
You can hear two rooms talking to each other. One is the beat world that runs from J Dilla and Nujabes through the quieter corners of contemporary chillhop. The other is alternative R&B as it sounds when a poet is writing the line, closer to H.E.R., Snoh Aalegra, or Sabrina Claudio than to chart gloss, with Erykah Badu still in the grain of the phrasing. BITEZ has already shown she can snap into Manchester bounce, as on 0161, her love letter to the city. Here she chooses hush. The city is still there. It has gone indoor.
What gives the single weight is the way self-belief arrives without speechmaking. Hope in the press note is cinematic, ombre mornings, blue evenings, a prayer that already knows the answer. On record it is smaller and stronger. A woman tells the listener that the story they tried to close is still open, then lets the groove carry the proof. After Eat My Heart and a stretch of singles that tested mask, desire, and local pride, Mrs. Odysseus (Only the Beginning) feels like a reset of posture. The poet is still present. The voyage is hers now.
Out today, the track asks for a late hour and a decent pair of headphones. It rewards attention the way a good window does. You look through it, then notice the frame is no longer attached to the house.
