Bob Dylan Revives “I Shall Be Released” After 18-Year Absence

During his Rough And Rowdy Ways Tour stop in Eugene, Oregon, Bob Dylan performed “I Shall Be Released” for the first time since 2008, ending a set that spanned his own deep catalog and vintage covers.

During the latest leg of his Rough And Rowdy Ways Tour, Bob Dylan closed a Tuesday set at Eugene’s Cuthbert Amphitheater with a slow, soulful take on “I Shall Be Released.” It was the first time he had performed the song in 18 years—his last known live version came at a 2008 gig in Warsaw.

Written in 1967 and recorded with The Band during their Basement Tapes sessions, the track has taken many shapes over the decades. The Band included their own recording on the 1968 debut Music From Big Pink, and Dylan later performed it in The Last Waltz alongside Ringo Starr and Ronnie Wood. Its return to the stage draws a direct line from those foundational moments to the present.
