A small Williamsburg gig gave the first live look at songs from her upcoming album, with guests Underscores, Kim Petras, and Clairo.
Charli XCX brought a handful of new songs to the stage for the first time Friday night, trading arena scale for the 550-capacity Music Hall of Williamsburg. The show opened with three live debuts from her forthcoming album Music, Fashion, Film: “Playboy Bunny,” “SS26,” and “Camera.”
The set largely left behind the Brat universe; only “Apple” survived from that era. Instead, the night pulled almost entirely from the new LP and beyond, including an unreleased track, “Take Away the Music,” before closing with Music, Fashion, Film’s “Wink Wink” and “Rock Music.”
Three guests punctuated the evening. Opening act Underscores joined for their own song “Music,” Kim Petras appeared for “Jeep,” and Clairo closed the surprises with “Sofia.”
The Brooklyn gig is one of two small-scale previews — a London date at Scala follows July 14 — before Charli returns to major festival stages, among them Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and Reading and Leeds. The full Music, Fashion, Film tour begins in September.
Music, Fashion, Film arrives July 24. Despite the lead single’s title, Charli has pushed back on the “rock album” label. “I’ve never thought about genre in a binary way,” she said. “It’s just me and A. G. Cook and Finn Keane, doing our thing.”
