CHVRCHES have released "Overthinker," the second song shared from All The King's Men, their first full-length album in almost six years. The record arrives January 22 via Futures and runs eleven tracks, following 2021's Screen Violence. "Overthinker" lands after "Roses," the comeback single that came in September and doubled as the album's opener.
The new song is a ballad built on synths, and its subject is family: the knotted, unglamorous work of navigating complicated dynamics with people you did not choose. Lauren Mayberry has spent the past few years writing from a solo vantage point, and the band's return has been framed around mining British and Scottish cultural history. On "Overthinker" that framing shows up less as reference than as tension, the music moving between anxious low passages and broad, bright lifts. The lyric video is out now on the band's VEVO channel.
The pacing of the record is becoming legible. "Roses" was the reintroduction, and "Overthinker" is the second look, placed fourth in the running order behind "Evil" and "Adore You." The tracklist reads like a sequence with a spine: "Royal Blue," "Comedown Tomorrow," "Friend Of A Friend," "Three Out Of Five," "Conman," then "Jamie's Prayer" and "Faith In Flying" to close. A song titled for someone named Jamie sitting two slots from the end suggests the album's family theme is not confined to one track.
The band has also confirmed UK dates for May 2027, opening at Manchester's O2 Victoria Warehouse on the first, then Birmingham, Norwich, and two nights at O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire in London on the sixth and seventh. Those are rooms sized for a band reasserting pop presence, and two London nights in a venue that holds a few thousand is a measured bet on how much the six-year gap has cost them.
Listen to "Overthinker" for the moment the low end gives way, the point where the anxiety in the arrangement breaks into the chorus lift. That seam is where CHVRCHES have always done their best work, and on an album promising to tread new ground, it is the first real evidence of what the trio sound like now.
